CS2 Float Value & Wear Guide

7 min read

How float value works in CS2, FN to BS exteriors, float caps, and when high float gets the overpay on Asiimov and Rust Coat.

What is float value in CS2?

Every CS2 skin has a float value between 0.00 and 1.00. That number controls how scratched the finish looks. Lower float looks cleaner. Higher float looks more worn.

Float never changes after the skin is created. You cannot grind it down or clean it up. Two of the same AK can both be Field-Tested and still look different if one is 0.16 and the other is 0.36.

Steam and most markets show the exterior first: Factory New, Minimal Wear, Field-Tested, Well-Worn, or Battle-Scarred. Buyers who care about price still inspect the exact float, because that is what moves value inside each exterior.

CS2 exteriors and float ranges

These are the five exteriors and their float ranges. Not every skin can drop in all five. Each finish has its own min and max float. AK-47 | Redline is a common example: it never drops Factory New because it cannot go below 0.10.

FN

Factory New0.00 to 0.07

MW

Minimal Wear0.07 to 0.15

FT

Field-Tested0.15 to 0.38

WW

Well-Worn0.38 to 0.45

BS

Battle-Scarred0.45 to 0.99

Same exterior, different float

Field-Tested is the best example. FT covers 0.15 to 0.38. A 0.16 FT can look close to MW. A 0.35 FT already looks rough. If you only sort by exterior, you miss that. Listing a clean low FT at a high FT price leaves money on the table.

The same thing happens in Factory New. A 0.001 FN and a 0.06 FN are both FN, but the lower float usually sells for more, especially when scratches show on the playside.

When high float costs more

Most skins sell for more with low float. A small group does the opposite. On those skins, heavy wear creates a look you cannot get on a cleaner copy, so buyers pay up for high float.

AWP | Asiimov is the main example. At a very high Battle-Scarred float, the scope is fully black. Traders call that a Blackiimov. It still lists as a normal BS Asiimov, but it looks different and usually gets a clear overpay.

Rust Coat knives are similar. Higher float means more rust on the blade. Max float copies are the ones people hunt, not the cleanest ones.

Float caps

Some skins only exist in part of the 0 to 1 float range. That is a float cap. If a finish cannot go below 0.18, it will never drop Factory New or Minimal Wear. Asiimov is one of those. That is why low FT Asiimovs and max float Blackiimovs both matter more than a random mid float.

How float affects price

On popular rifles and mid-tier skins, cleaner floats inside the same exterior usually cost more. On low-demand skins the gap can be tiny. On knives, gloves, and rare pieces it can be huge.

Trade ups use float too. The output float is the average of the ten input floats. If someone needs a specific output float, they will overpay for cheap inputs with the exact float they need.

Float is not the same as pattern. Pattern is where the paint lands on the model. Float is how worn that paint looks.

Float overpay examples

Low float overpay on mid-tier skins, plus a max float Blackiimov. Open a card to see how much the float adds over the base price.

FAQ

What is a good float?
Depends on the skin. Most finishes are worth more in low float. Trade ups need exact floats on cheap inputs. Blackiimov Asiimov and max float Rust Coats are the opposite: high float is what people pay for.
Why do two FN skins cost different amounts?
FN covers a range of floats, not one look. A 0.01 FN usually looks cleaner than a 0.06 FN, so it sells for more.
Does float matter for trade ups?
Yes. The output float is the average of the ten input floats. When a recipe is popular, people buy cheap inputs with the exact float they need.
How do I check float on SkinAppraisal?
Start an appraisal, pick the skin, enter the float, and check the estimate. The breakdown shows how much the float adds over the base price.
Does float affect gameplay?
No. It only changes how the skin looks. Spray, damage, and everything else stay the same.
What is a Blackiimov?
A very high float AWP | Asiimov where the scope is fully black. Same exterior as a normal BS Asiimov, different look, and usually a clear overpay.
